I have been doing my own DIY projects for years. Everything from reframing my own windows, to building a customized enclosure for my Chameleon, to building a pantry and utility closet in my home. It amazes me how many people are surprised that I am capable of these projects. I don’t really know why it surprises people but here are the top 5 reasons why people don’t think they can do DIY projects.

  1. I don’t have the tools needed!
    • Tools have become so much cheaper over the years. You don’t need top-of-the-line brands for small home projects. If you are a construction worker or use the tools daily, then you can splurge on higher end tools. For home projects, there is no need to spend a bunch of money on a tool you’re only going to use occasionally. Here are the tools I have purchased over the years and where you can get them:

2. I don’t know how to build things!

  • You are in the perfect place then! Pinterest has millions of pins that have tutorials and step-by-step guides to make building something pretty simple. If you find something you like, you can add your own spin to it to fit your needs. The basics are there, your imagination will do the rest. You can also find videos all over the internet on DIY projects.

3. I don’t have the time!

  • Most of my projects were not completed in a day. I work full time and have a house and a toddler to take care of. If it is a project that makes my life easier, I find the time. My pantry only took 2 weekends, and I didn’t work on it all day each day. I would do a little here and there until it was finished.
  • My utility closet took a little more time because it was bigger but again, I worked on it when I could. I think overall that one took me 3 or 4 weekends to complete.

4. I don’t have the money!

  • DIY projects don’t need to be expensive. I have a gallon of white paint that I have used on 3 projects and gallon of black paint I’ve used on 2 projects so far. I also bought cheap paint. There is really no need to buy expensive material to finish a project. Most of my material comes from Lowe’s and Amazon. To cut costs, I also use whitewood/pine instead of the more expensive types. You can buy 2x3s instead of 2x4s as well for framing. If you’re not needing the frame to hold the weight of a house, you can typically use smaller pieces.

5. I’m not creative enough to come up with ideas for a DIY project!

  • Again, Pinterest is your best friend when you need ideas. If you’re looking to organize your cabinets, type “how to organize kitchen cabinets” into the search field of Pinterest and let your browsing begin. Eventually, you will have seen enough pins to come up with some great solutions.

DIY projects are not just for the highly skilled or the overly creative. With the right mindset and resources, anyone can turn their ideas into reality. The common misconceptions surrounding DIY—such as not having the necessary tools, knowledge, time, money, or creativity—can all be overcome with a bit of ingenuity and perseverance. Affordable tools are widely available, and the internet is a treasure trove of step-by-step guides and inspiration. Even with a busy schedule, dedicating small chunks of time to your projects can lead to impressive results. Budget-friendly materials can still achieve professional-looking outcomes, and creativity can be sparked by exploring platforms like Pinterest. So, don’t let these misconceptions hold you back; embrace the DIY spirit and start creating!
